Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone has been primarily used as an ingredient in skin-bleaching creams/gels to help lighten and brighten dark areas of the skin. Some of the uses of Hydroquinone include lightening moles, freckles, and birth marks as well as helping to diminish the appearance of scars such as surgery scars as well as acne scars. However, recently, the safety of Hydroquinone has been questioned. While most skin bleaching/lightening products contain a 2% Hydroquinone solution, any exposure to Hydroquinone presents certain health risks. This is why the safest skin bleaching/lightening products do not contain any traces of Hydroquinone.
If you are currently using a skin care product, be sure to examine the ingredients label. If your product contains Hydroquinone it may be in your best interest to discontinue use. If you experience any noticeable side effects from using Hydroquinone, contact a medical provider as soon as possible.
